# Local videos

Open browser-local files or direct media URLs.

Use **Open Video** from the connect screen or dashboard. Local files work without a connected media server; direct media URLs require a signed-in Plex or Jellyfin session.

## Local files

Local files stay on your device and are not uploaded to the Cliparr server.

Some browsers can reopen your file after a refresh if you grant permission again. Otherwise, choose the file again after refreshing or closing the tab.

## Direct media URLs

Sign in to a provider before opening a direct media URL. URLs stream through Cliparr’s media proxy and must use HTTP or HTTPS, be reachable from the Cliparr server, and not point at a blocked internal address.

For smooth seeking and clipping, use URLs that support byte-range requests. HLS `.m3u8` URLs can be opened when Cliparr can fetch the playlist and its segment URLs.

## When to use local videos

Use local files when the video is already on your device or you do not need a media server. Use a direct media URL when you are signed in and want to clip remotely hosted media without active playback discovery.
